Alcohol and the church... are they a good mix? This morning in our study of the themes from Proverbs we examined what scripture has to say regarding alcohol. The ethical question we intended to answer was this: Does the Bible allow for a righteous consumption of alcoholic beverages? The fundamental question is ethical and Biblical in nature, not cultural or demographical; which means it requires an answer from a Biblical, not an emotional base. Our challenge is to set aside our own personal historical influences and cultural biases and approach the question as humbly searching for Biblical truth rather than searching for support for our own position or personal desires.
Regardless of where you stand on this issue, Jesus is still Lord. We are still family. Enjoy the teaching. May it bring lots of tension and growth to your spiritual muscles.
Chris,
What a great message! Probably one of the most balanced I've ever heard on alcohol and the Bible. Thanks for posting this.

Chris,
I too appreciated a Biblical based teaching on this subject. I was raised to believe that it was wrong to drink alcohol, period. I never quite believed that, and I kind of fell into the second category of folks, that thought it could be o.k. but I chose not to drink for fear of being a stumbling block to someone else. I believe the teaching of total abstinence by my parents was because there were some people in my extended family who were alcoholics and all my parents could see was the bad side of what an over-indulgance could do, so that is where they were coming from. They meant well, but were teaching out of a fear of what might happen. Of course we know that you can get out of balance in many areas, which are not healthy, besides drinking. Thanks for taking on a difficult subject, and teaching with Biblical truth, and not a cultural or geographical bias. It takes courage to teach the truth, which could open you up to criticism. But keep in mind, Jesus went to the party, and when they ran out of wine, He made more. (and I don't think it was "Welch's grape juice"). Anyway have a great day. God bless you.
